Leap Year: fun facts

And here we are , stepping into the end of this month of February. Leap Year! (in case you did not notice)
We understand that a leap year occurs every four years to help synchronize the calendar year with the solar year, or the length of time it takes the earth to complete its orbit about the sun, which is about 365¼ days. The length of the solar year, however, is slightly less than 365¼ days—by about 11 minutes. To compensate for this discrepancy, the leap year is omitted three times every four hundred years.

But, did you know that your chances of being born on leap day is about 1 in 1,500?! That fact comes to a stats of about 187,000 people in the US and 4 million people in the world who were born on Leap Day.
Two other fascinating facts that can be count as a major contra with one another:
Greek superstition claims that bad luck will come to couples that marry during a leap year. -- However... Leap day is also when women were once officially allowed to step outside of tradition and propose to their beaus. According to legend, St. Bridget complained to St. Patrick in fifth-century Ireland about women having to wait for so long for a man to propose. Ah, now I know how feminism started in other part of the world *wink.

So this Leap year... Have you decided on which way you want to get through it?

Not my fave movie but watching this tonight can be a cute idea :). Matthew Goode? hmmmm

Date a girl who reads. And better yet, who writes

My partner, critics, friend in writing, Yendi Amalia, posted this article on my facebook wall. I read them all with feelings that are so hard to illustrate. Too funny!

I bold lines that I can relate to:

And, thank you Yendi! We both know that a girl who reads (and writes) should not settle for anything less :)) Hahaha...
Date a girl who reads. Date a girl who spends her money on books instead of clothes. She has problems with closet space because she has too many books. Date a girl who has a list of books she wants to read, who has had a library card since she was twelve. (Try 9!)

Find a girl who reads. You’ll know that she does because she will always have an unread book in her bag. She’s the one lovingly looking over the shelves in the bookstore, the one who quietly cries out when she finds the book she wants. You see the weird chick sniffing the pages of an old book in a second hand book shop? That’s the reader. They can never resist smelling the pages, especially when they are yellow.

She’s the girl reading while waiting in that coffee shop down the street. If you take a peek at her mug, the non-dairy creamer is floating on top because she’s kind of engrossed already. Lost in a world of the author’s making. Sit down. She might give you a glare, as most girls who read do not like to be interrupted. Ask her if she likes the book.

Buy her another cup of coffee.

Let her know what you really think of Murakami. See if she got through the first chapter of Fellowship. Understand that if she says she understood James Joyce’s Ulysses she’s just saying that to sound intelligent. Ask her if she loves Alice or she would like to be Alice.

It’s easy to date a girl who reads. Give her books for her birthday, for Christmas and for anniversaries. Give her the gift of words, in poetry, in song. Give her Neruda, Pound, Sexton, Cummings. Let her know that you understand that words are love. Understand that she knows the difference between books and reality but by god, she’s going to try to make her life a little like her favorite book. It will never be your fault if she does.

She has to give it a shot somehow.

Lie to her. If she understands syntax, she will understand your need to lie. Behind words are other things: motivation, value, nuance, dialogue. It will not be the end of the world.

Fail her. Because a girl who reads knows that failure always leads up to the climax. Because girls who understand that all things will come to end. That you can always write a sequel. That you can begin again and again and still be the hero. That life is meant to have a villain or two.

Why be frightened of everything that you are not? Girls who read understand that people, like characters, develop. Except in the Twilight series. (:))))

If you find a girl who reads, keep her close. When you find her up at 2 AM clutching a book to her chest and weeping, make her a cup of tea and hold her. You may lose her for a couple of hours but she will always come back to you. She’ll talk as if the characters in the book are real, because for a while, they always are.

You will propose on a hot air balloon. Or during a rock concert. Or very casually next time she’s sick. Over Skype.

You will smile so hard you will wonder why your heart hasn’t burst and bled out all over your chest yet. You will write the story of your lives, have kids with strange names and even stranger tastes. She will introduce your children to the Cat in the Hat and Aslan, maybe in the same day. You will walk the winters of your old age together and she will recite Keats under her breath while you shake the snow off your boots.

Date a girl who reads because you deserve it. You deserve a girl who can give you the most colorful life imaginable. If you can only give her monotony, and stale hours and half-baked proposals, then you’re better off alone. If you want the world and the worlds beyond it, date a girl who reads.

Or better yet, date a girl who writes.

Inspiration Sunday: Perfect to me

Hello Sunday! This post will be a bit cheesy, but I have been a bit like that these days. Cheesy and corny and... hopefully sweet :) Even just a little bit.
Have you heard this one? P!nk seems madly in love when performing this song of hers. But this one is effortlessly endearing to my ears.
Hope this will inspire that soft side of you, sweethearts. As it does to me...

Oh, Pretty, pretty please/ Don't you ever, ever feel/ Like your less than less than perfect.
Pretty, pretty please/ If you ever, ever feel/ Like your nothing/ You're perfect to me.

What your drink says about you

My sister was here two weeks ago and we hang out for drinks two evenings in a row. Her sweet best friend was also with us during the short Bali getaway.

Though we are really close- my sister and I, we never really got a chance to hang out in a bar with lot. So- truth be told; I did not know what her favorite drink was until she put this "about to throw up" face after one sip of my fave Gin and tonic that I ordered for her with such excitement.

I mean, how could you not like it?It is simple, refreshing, and it's Gin and tonic?! It has no drama, it is what it is, the color will never mislead you, and it does not get you to question "What else is in it?".

Luckily my second attempt worked; Pop colored cocktail drink with a sweet twist. An umbrella will do a bit of a touche finishing.  To the very last drop... cocktail be gone. That's her drink. I will keep that in mind. Sorry sweety:/.

I wonder... Do you believe that your drink can tell a lot about your personality? I read this cute article: " Personality and Drink "and cannot help to smile and cringe at the same time.
Since I like gin and tonic.... this categorized my Personality as : Mature, has picky taste; knows what she wants. The article also give you a guide on how to Approach a Gin and Tonic lover : If she wants you, she'll send YOU a drink :))

How about you, sweethearts? What is your favorite drink?

Even at times when I am with my coffee :)

Life to her years

Hi sweethearts... I just found this tumblr "Life to her years" and as predicted... make me think of my old man. Aching inside, reading all through the 50 guides, I cannot be more affirmed that my Dad was a great man, the best father anyone could ever have.

You may think I am exaggerating but any daughter can proudly do so.

If you are a man with daughter(s), please read this message. If you are a daughter, be thankful even if you think you only experience a thing or two out of this sweet maxims.

One thing that make me swell is this particular one : 29. If her mom enrolls her in swim lessons, make sure you get in the pool too. Don’t be intimidated if there are no other dads there. It’s their loss.

(My late Dad did this. And he could not even swim well)

Awesome Monday: Awesome People Hanging Out Together; The Digerati

Sorry I did not post it this morning. We still have a few hours before Monday ends,  so this is where I am going to say the old "better late than never" cliche :) .
Inspired by this tumblr , Awesome Monday is a feature you can enjoy every Monday - assuredly to give your Monday a good jump start into the new week.
See this picture... a dining table filled with numbers of Digerati with President Obama? I would kill to be a part of them for a chat, or maybe just to stare at Obama's beaming smile.

Have a nice Monday sweethearts. I am just had a good dinner earlier ... No, not with the Digerati... with friends :)

Hey Jude

I cannot help it. Please have mercy on my music taste. It is not that easy for me to fall head over heel's for today's generation of musician... hahaha!

And baby, yes this one is for you.

Hey Jude, don't be afraid/ You were made to go out and get her/ The minute you let her under your skin/ Then you begin to make it better/ And anytime you feel the pain, hey Jude, refrain/ Don't carry the world upon your shoulders/ For well you know that it's a fool who plays it cool/ By making his world a little colder/ Hey Jude, don't let me down/ You have found her, now go and get her/ Remember to let her into your heart/ Then you can start to make it better

Inspiration Sunday: Don't carry it all

My energy level is now close to zero. Ever feel that way? How do you deal with it? Now I do not really have the time to take an "off" day from the world so I think listening to good music and a few light readings will help. I will try to spare a half an hour or so this evening.
Is it bad if I categorized this as an inspiration? This is something that I need to learn to do, this thing quoted below. So...

Oh, remember this line from The Beatles' " Hey Jude" ? ;  "And anytime you feel the pain, hey Jude refrain... Don't carry the world upon your shoulder"

I am feeling like an old soul today. This song enlivens it. Now I am off to the beach for some brunch with my best girls. Dying for a cheese and bacon omelet, and a large coffee.
What is your plan this weekend? Wishing you a beautiful one...

Nerd quirk: Reading in public

All.the.time.

Socks and I - how we stick together no matter the weather

I am in a long relationship, but with no strings attached. With ... socks.
Truth: I sleep well with socks wrapping my feet to keep them warm till dawn breaks. I can sleep without- but not as heavenly sound as if I have them warming my toes .

How we met? We crossed path in Bandung- West Java ( my city of birth, and where lived for a few years to finish my bachelor study). Bandung's climate is much cooler than Jakarta and most areas in Java island, so I can say our hooking up was pretty predictable. It was natural. It was effortless.

To my surprise... the toe warmer continues its legacy to accompany me when I moved back to to Jakarta. And now that I live in a lush tropical island-Bali (in the afternoon, the weather can burn you alive with its roaring and sizzling 35 degrees Celsius), somehow... our mutual bond remains. Strange, right?

I treat them as my delicate. I use flowery scent softener and a lime scented detergent to wash them. That is the least I can do for they always make my 7 hours of resting so perfect and complete!

We know each others' moves, we are familiar with our morning perks. And we are planning to stick together for as long as we both shall live. In bed only. No strings attached.
And baby, If I happen to crash at your place one day ( too much of Gin Tonic, and unintentionally not bringing socks...) please offer me a fresh pair. I will be so happy to say yes to it.

ps: So when I read that one of my favorite blogger Joanna post this funny comic from  Lizzy Stewart , I can't help myself from laughing so hard!
Do you wear socks to bed too?

The (not so) crazy little thing called LOVE

I love how you can make me feel like I am the wisest lady there is in the world. I love how you make me feel gullible,  sick, confused and lost at the same time feeling like I can burst to shout; Eureka! I just love that.

I love how you can immerse your way to every inch and corner of all the holes and pores in my head. Playing with every single nerves there is. Tangle them, untangle. Then you go deeper within me... just to tear my heart apart, all inside and out just to make sure it's still there.

I love how you can have this eerie power in me. I love how you enable and elevate me at one point and how you strangle me the next minute. I love how people cannot live without you. I love that you empower those people to do even the craziest thing- things they cannot imagine doing be it in a dream, they do in reality. That is because of you.

You are as arrogant, as high demanding, as boastful as the king in H.C Andersen's story's "The Emperor's new plaid". You are as timid, as sensitive, as fragile as the lady in " Princess and the Pea" (Yes, also an Andersen's story) .

You are either an up or a down. An east or the west. Top or bottom.  You are never an average nor a mediocre. Never in the middle. You are twisted and manic and oh so hard to put up through ... You are solemn and humble and dignified. Even so... I still love you.

I love that you made me fly to cloud nine that day. That one moment in time. I still adore you when I hit rock bottom and shatter myself to pieces. I love that because of you.... I gather myself up again. Every broken strings, every scars, every  wound. I love that you healed me.

I love that you make me believe. In myself, in every single force there is on earth. I love that even when I did try to hide, you have your way of finding me. I love that when I need to be alone to understand you better, you let me.

I love that you give me a reason to be who I really am. I love that you leave it up to me. Not to you. I love that you... caught me off guard but you also let me take charge.

So this is also to make it clear between us. You are not the crazy one. How I see you, is.
But I would really love... If we can see each-other again someday. For real, Love.

ps: This is only my general idea about the word-without it being associated to anyone.

Awesome Monday: Jesus with children

So today's awesome Monday is a little different. I have my reasons I tend to treasure for my self. But I must tell you that seeing this image reminds me of a picture hanging in my bedroom wall when I was a kid. Seeing this make me realize that all I ever wanted is to still be His child and cling into His hands at all times. I know His awesome love will let me do so. Have a great Monday sweethearts!

To spend less

Here's a little secret. I have been doing this for a while, since I was so irritated to keep finding myself struggling to save more money... apparently Budgeting with cash envelopes is the best way to do so!
Who would have thought that this old, traditional way still has its charm and power? For me, it works seriously well, because doing so will make me spend less than what I budgeted from the actual amount of my disposable income:). If you want, it is not going to kill you to try...
Find more info on how to do it here and save more baby! (Oh, I hope I don't sound like a grandmother)

Loving Friday: Loving somebody forever

Couldn't find the source to give the credit to but I fancy this to every single bits and pieces. The sweet sender, my best friend of 15 years said that this reminds her of me!
Oh girl, how can I not love you back!
Hmm... wait, am I supposed to be not offended by:  "expects way too much?"

I need to excuse myself and make a call now.
:/

Happy Birthday Isaac!

Our youngest, the only man in the troops, one we are oh so proud of.
My Mom's jewel, a spitting image of our Dad.
You are a young man now... May you ways always be guided by Lord Jesus. May your dreams and hopes are in His graceful hands and blessings. We couldn't ask for anything more but to thank God for granting you in our family and to wish that you let your heart and future be molded by Him every.single.day. Amen!

Fear not

By no means to make this too personal, tho I cannot tell you the reason... I have to say that I am nearly suffocated by fears and worries now. But,  stumbling upon this words... :) I am now in a solemn still. Feel free to use the power of His words, sweethearts. I know I am doing it.

Thanks Isaac!

DND: I am reading

So our seats are next to each other on this flight. You and I. Strangers. When you see me curling up to my window seat with a book on my nose, I was not pretending to read, nor avoiding a contact with anyone or acting rude. I am reading. Every.single.word.
I am accentuating every single notation in the book I carefully chose to be my companion during the flight.

So, yes... A polite nod and a smile should suffice. I did give you that. But we don't have to get to know each others' dreams and status and the last movie we saw . I am not obliged to explain about my tan and you can go through all the pages in that Men magazine without being cautious that I will jump in and make a stupid question. I am bestowing you a space. A luxury of silence. Take privilege in it.

I am on the last 2 chapters with this book now. I can be left alone and trust me, you need it just as much.
Let's spare ourselves form the awkwardness of ice-breaking and I trust that you can enjoy the flight too.

Charles Dickens Bicentenary Day: 7 February

On this day, 7th February 2012, institutions and organizations from all over the world are commemorating this very special anniversary in honor of Charles Dickens .
Was Dickens part of your childhood? I read Oliver Twist, The Christmas Carol, A Tale of Two Cities and ... my favorite: Nicholas Nickelby!
I did not read them over and over again like what I used to do to Lindgren's book, but none of the books from Dickens can be considered as an average. They stick in your mind forever, freaks you out to a certain period of time and to this day, and, get me all curious about England.
I would love to see a play of any of Dickens' work. Hopefully sooner than I thought!

Below pictures from Penguin Classics Clothbound series make me want to read all of Dickens' work again :)

Awesome Monday: Awesome people hanging out together; Queen Elizabeth II and Helen Mirren

Good morning Monday! Are you all armed up to welcome the new week? I know I am. A mixed feeling; nervous and thrilled. It will be busy but I know I can do it. Hope you are just as excited.
On today's Awesome Monday, I posted a picture of Queen Elizabeth II.
On Wednesday, 6th February, 1952 : King George V1 dies making Elizabeth II the Sovereign of Great Britain, The Queen of England. The then future queen heard the news while on a trip to Kenya .
Have a lovely Monday sweethearts. I have to work but half of my mind goes to the Superbowl that is happening now on the other side of the world where I am living. Superbowl 2012

No offense, this is mainly because none of my favorite team made it to this year's Superbowl. But I am still keen to know the result ( kinda wish that The New England Patriots win!). Tho' my reason being is rooted from my friend's ( an all time Giants fan) silliness in comparing my new idol : Tim Tebow, the QB from the Denver Boncos,  to Eli Manning). Yes, I mean you, Ara! ;p
By the way... Have you heard that Tim Tebow got the NFL Honors Award ?

Love letter from Icarus

To get along with the month of February, I decided to post more about Love and relationship. The first will be about; Love letters!

I received one unforgettable love letter when I was in my sophomore year in college. It was short, sweet, poetic and got me all whimsical.

One heart breaker line- I remember clearly- was the closure : I do not wish for you to feel the same, because that would probably making me like Icarus - who flew too high up to the sun and burn himself to death :')

Nothing happened with the guy and I... We did not give it a try. Too complicated to explain:)
However, I was so surprised with the analogy he wrote. Greek mythology is one of among other things that I highly admire, and to know that a guy is using it as a "pick up" line in his letter for me is beyond sweet. He did not go on and on with praises but simply knock me off by hitting that hot button. Also, a sign that he also reads. A darling geek. (Take note, gentlemen!)

Do you still remember the first or last time you received a love letter? When was the first? The most memorable? The cheesiest? Is the person still in your life right now?

Do you send postcards?

Few weeks ago, a friend at the office received a postcard from his relative in Italy.  I must say I was a bit envious. Hahaha... It has been years since I last received a postcard. This chivalry is closer to extinct I guess...

And now... I am in a good mood to spill a little secret of mine: I always add brownie points to someone who still send postcards. Not e-cards, that's sweet too, but if you still send postcards from the post office when you are away (or yes, from the concierge desk) to relatives, friends, loved one(s) ...hmmm... it shows that you have that classic civilized habit. I call it like that. And that is good. I mean; real good. *wink.

Yes, there is a reason behind my adoration in beautiful postcards .
Ah, can I be anymore of an old soul?

Uppercase

Inspiration Sunday: Lesson from a simple regret

I have learned not to regret things. Be it a life decisions or a smaller case like a purchase. But I bought this book last month; LIFE: 100 Photographs that Changed the World and I regret it big time. Not because of the price or quality or anything like that, the book is actually great! But simply because it's a record of how the world is so full of awful things and loaded with heartless people.
Kudos to all the magnificent and brave photographers' work featured in the book though... they did make a significant change. But I just can not take another look of it. I am that person who would switch the TV off when it comes to a sad breaking news. This is a habit I picked up since high school and my late Grandpa once said " Good luck in facing the world out there, you naive girl living in denial" (Ha! I made it this far Grandpa:))
The pictures in the book are vivid, haunting, poignant, striking and speaks nothing but the truth. Mostly about war, chaos, and tragedy.  Source of pain: Politic. An area where my understanding is close to zero. And though it might sound silly; I am thankful for that.
Now I am inspired to imagine my life being photographed by a higher force up there and all I need to do is making sure I can make even the slightest change to the world. Maybe not the whole world, but around me. I still have faith that the world can be a better place (which starts within selves) and hope you are on my side.

Romans 12: 2 : Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will.

New York in the eyes of a French artist

So we talked about Paris vs New York from a graphic designer's point of view.
Now,  Daniel Castan, a French artist, recently finished a "New York" themed paintings. His secret potion is to add resin to acrylic paint to make it dry quickly, resulting is these gorgeously admirable textured paintings . Have you been to New York? Do you think the painting mirrors the pace of the city perfectly? I want to know...
ps: Resin is some kind of a sealing wax/gum.

Forever be my baby?

I just got off the phone with my sister Volent. We were talking about her son, my nephew. His new hobbies, his new friends... How time flies and just in a blink of an eye, Joseph is going to be 5 in May this year.
Are you a momma? Do you experience that happy but aching feeling witnessing your little one(s) growing up? Do you -not so secretly- wish for them to go back being your baby? Did you silently wipe your tears when he finally let your hands go as he walked into his classroom and say " I am alright Mama... you can go now" ?
For my dear sister, allow me to share this picture of Joseph Kiyoshi when he was 1 year old- reading his first bible I got for him. And post a beautiful poem that got me all teary :)
ps: Stay blessed, healthy and happy, our cheeky Joseph!

Remedy

Severe migraine! How do you cope with it? If it happens at work- I always draw myself for a quick walk all around the resort all the way to the beach and back to the office after drinking a big glass of water. It usually helps. If not, well... aspirin to the rescue. If it happens on my day off... grrrr; music, a quick nap and some old-classic picture browsing will do the magic.
I fell for this picture at one look. Then I play some Sinatra's, Etta James' and Al Green's tracks that puts me down to a quick nap. Migraine begone!
And if only an old music store like one in this picture is existing somewhere around the corner, I would love to take a walk even under the rain (like now), for a soulful remedy.
I want to know. Are you a big pill popper when it comes to cure a headache? If not, what do you do?

Geeky Bad Boy? Yum!

About 10 years ago, bad boy material always made me swell. Most of my closest friends know that I am the biggest wuss there is when it comes to relationship and or making the first move, so the bad boy crushes always ended up just being a head turner and a stomping heart I kept as a secret. I am not into bad boy anymore. Guess, that was just a phase.

But, I always... always have a thing for... geeks! Designers (web, graphic), writers, journos, architect, engineers, physicians, professors, columnists, (good goofy looking, glasses, preppy but not too much, a bit scruffy).

Now I wonder... if only I had the guts to approach any of the bad boy during that dainty phase of my life, is there a possibility that one of them is also a geek in a bad boy skin? Like Will here in Good Will Hunting? Aaahhh... you know the saying: in the end, you only regret the things you did not do. Bummer.

Anne Hathaway is amazing!

I later on learned that this movie is based on a book by David Nicholls . Fortunately I have not read it, otherwise I might miss a chance to see Anne Hathaway's awesome act! Since, you know, I have a tendency to resent watching a-book adaptation-movies. Ha!

I am hooked! Not only that Muratyan came out with a book , the postcard box is also available ! It may take more than just a patience to wait for them to be available in Indonesia so I am eyeballing a promo flight fare to Singapore anytime soon (or some kinda super promo/cheapest ever-if that's even possible?)
Or if anyone is flying there within this month... please?
