What is the scariest part about relationship?

For me, it has always been (and is) about when I feel a gentle kick in my gut, that I have started being vulnerable. My autopilot defence mechanism will tell me to: stop. "You should never accept help." "This too will end badly."

This is the loudest one; "You are going to get hurt."

Of course, I have learned that vulnerability is a key ingredient in creating healthy, fulfilling relationship. I understand the whys, I even heard stories about how couples are getting solid foundation from being open about their fears and or worries. Because contrary to what the world believes, vulnerability, is actually a measure of strength and courage, not weakness.

But when it comes to actually being vulnerable in real life, I struggle my wobbly ways forward. How do I do that?

Especially, how do one who have been through most things alone able to say "I need help.", "Will you take care of me?". Or simply saying "Can you pick me up at the airport, please?"

With this pandemic lurking, messing with our every plans, collapsing the world, I am cornered to feeling depressed from time to time. There are significant albeit painful changes that my family must face, some are even exposed to the virus. Like normal humans, I cannot always roll with the punches.

I am slowly learning to lean in, to accepting help and support. Into believing that God has more in store when it comes to love and life.

I hope, you are being patient with me.

Walking the talk

Don't you just love it when article tag lines promise to help us to discover “Who I’m meant to be.” Am I not already that person? How does one go about doing this? Could there be a less scientific pursuit?
I tried to be my skeptical self but then... well... This question been banging my head for almost two years now and I've lost sleeps thinking about it!

At the end of 2017, I've finally had the courage to stop talking about my fears and make that change. It's not just about the signs and all the coincidences, it's about what will make me go to sleep feeling less doubtful about what I am actually doing in life. I need to be the person that I am meant to be.

So, here goes.

Today is my official last day working in the hotel industry.
Yes, you've read that right.

And whilst typing the above, I was waiting for wave of emotions to shock me. To my surprise, it did not happen... it feels so natural. After ten years, after five properties. After making my path just enough people actually commented with "Wow, it's like the end of an era!"
I do not feel anything in that scale of magnitude. I appreciate the comments but deep down I know that none of us is irreplaceable. We just need to make sure we are creating our own legacy. No matter how small.
This feels okay. And if I am being brutally honest, my body feels like it's embracing its longing journey. "Where have you been?"

From tomorrow onward, I will embrace my "Act 2" with a small communications agency. Writing, creating content for much smaller establishments to pay the bills and to have enough to share and at the same time using my time for causes I am invested in  like this, this, or this.
And the book I've been talking about finishing? Goodness me.
Will this be a big break or an epic fail, I know I owe this to myself. I've been feeling so guilty for doing nothing about my own longtime dreams and hopes.
And what's worst? I have been talking about it for years!

But all that stops now.

And I have faith that God is on my side. To Him be the glory.

Why I do not want to change my last name

I have edited and am re-posting this from 2012 archives.

“What is in a name, that which we call a rose …” The great Shakespeare once said. And I think I can understand the poet a little bit.

There are many things in life that I am not sure of. Politics, how to cook, and, what is the deal with daylight savings time. But my name is not one of them. I will never going to drop it. And, behold… I am not preaching why you should not change your last name, let alone saying that if you do; you are wrong.
No, nothing like that. This is just about why I would not.
  1. My last name is the chunkiest part of me. Followed by my cheeks and maybe my not so toned abs. It is me. It is everything that forms me to the day I met you. I have been breathing, living, walking, eating, and laugh-cry for decades with that name.
  2. For years, I have received letters and invitations with that name addressed to me, and bills and pay checks too. It is also the name that’s written in my prescriptions. I have been renewing IDs with that name, applied for jobs and filling out magazine subscriptions with that too. Social media platforms? Yea, that. Some might think those are silly reasons, but… I cannot help it, it is who I am. And the idea of going through the hassle of changing it is just…meh.
  3. I adore the very first man I know in life, my Dad. And carrying his last name is a privilege, a meaningful gem I wish to carry to my grave, crafted to my tomb if I am buried, engraved to my urn if I am cremated.
  4. My Mom never changed her maiden name. And I do not recall her being bugged by a nagging husband pushing her to change it. He, in all his manliness never did that to her. In our very eyes, he was the pillar, the head, the captain of the family.
  5. Patriarchal force is one of the strongest thing that embodies a Batak culture.  So if you’re a Batak lady, married to a Batak man, you might hear sayings like “You are a (insert husband’s last name) now, you should prioritize (insert husband’s last name) relatives and events before anything else.” My Batak family operates (if that’s the word) on love and passion. What we prioritize are always based on reality, logic and urgency. Not names and or hierarchies.
  6. A tradition. Some might declare. I hate to say this but… Us women were not being able to vote decades ago. That has changed, yes?
  7. Most women would change their name immediately as they get married. It may be a force of habit. I get that. But hopefully we all understand that marriage needs bigger efforts than just a change of name. I for one know that for sure. I did not change it when I got married in 2008 and am sticking with that decision.
Here are some questions people have politely asked me over this matter:
  1. Why not hyphenate and ask your husband to hyphenate his name too? I can say it is great for equality, but then it would be two people changing their identity for marriage. As I said in #7 above, you need more than that. So, I opt to invest my energy elsewhere. I might hyphenate for social events but not officially.
  2. What will your children have as a last name? I will try to raise my future kids so that they will be proud carrying their last name, which is their father’s. They will have my last name as their middle name. Why? Because, if I am not mistaken, you need my eggs and my womb, yes?
  3. Won't you feel like less of a family if you have a different last name from your husband and children? I am not a mama yet. However, I'm quite sure that if I bear and or raise a child, that is enough to qualify me for feeling like their family. As with their father, we will go through ups and downs together and got each other’s back. We will be busy handling life and there be no time to check on our last names.
  4. Are you just afraid of divorce? Well. Divorce did not kill me. Obvs. And that is not a reason for my decision. I know I will love him dearly, and hope we are going to be together forever until the end of time or at least until I witness an aurora while gazing at herds of unicorns with him. But, it will be naive not to realize that something like a third of marriages end in divorce. Would I then change back to my birth name? And if I re-marry (if, again), do I change it again to the new husband's name? What am I, a cattle? Can you handle the administrative hassle? Boy, I skipped many fields in magazine subscriptions, that is how lazy I can be!
  5. Are you saying that if I decide to change my last name, it means I am not proud of who I am? No. This is not about you. It’s about me. I only do things that make me happier and feel better. I know changing my last name will not do so for me, so I am sticking with mine.
  6. Maybe you’re just being stubborn? It is not a maybe. It is a yes.
  7. What if your husband is James Franco, or Michael Fassbender  !? Ha. You got me. I just made that question up. But the answer remains. No. I think Hutasoit suits me best.
Note to my future long life partner, whoever you may be. Even if you are Franco, or Fassbender.
My dearest, if someday God grant us children, I promise you, I- a woman with head so strong not wanting to change her maiden name- can take care of them... educate them with love so solid and discipline with grace so that they will be so proud carrying their last name. That is yours.
I hope you prefer me to portray my love and respect for you in that noble way.

Love,

Tressabel Hutasoit

What 2014 has taught me

Let's throwback for a bit.
2014 was the first ever year I entered with NO resolution at all. I just skipped it. I can never really stop biting my fingernails when am anxious anyway, and good luck with "Try to skill cooking a dish or two."

I just wanted to try a different approach to life and see what it brings. I can be a big time worrier and ahem... a bit of a control freak and just too hard on myself.
So, having no resolution list is actually a big thing for me.
But look what I have learned and accomplished without the so-called list...
  1. I lost a few friends. Or, let's say... The dynamic I used to have with some of them have changed. And it is personal, with no intention at all to have enemies. You just need to admit that not all relationships are worth fighting for. Especially ones that does not nurture you, keep hurting you. Or, ones you cannot trust.
  2. My energy is now more invested to fewer people who nourishes me. Why? Because instead of hanging out with the #1 group of friends at a coffee shop, dragging myself to pointless drama, I spend more time writing emails to my friend(s) (who's probably a thousand miles away) with things that has substance for the both of us to grow. At the same time, I gained a new skill! I now can tell the difference between someone who listens to you attentively and then respond, AND ones that's just waiting for their turn to talk.
  3. I made a move to a new job and got a promotion. Not an easy decision but... Thank you God! I always believe in Your timing.
  4. We lost 2 dear cousins in 2014. And a young man, best friend of my brother. Tough. Made me question things but... knowing Phil 1:21, I am grateful for I know we will see each other again someday.
  5. I did not blog much in 2014 and realized it is making me less fulfilled, so yes... I am going to write more.
  6. You cannot (and do not have to) fix every broken strings in your relationships or social life. But you can change light bulbs at home.
  7. I learned tricks on how to open a stubborn jar lid! Seriously helpful.
  8. Running makes me a happier person. I am setting a higher bar this year by running through harder tracks that I know are not for the faint of heart. On average, I run 3*5K/ week. Not that bad I guess.
  9. It is okay to fall in and out of love. Ahem.
  10. Nothing is thicker than blood. I always nestle back under my siblings love, encouragement and laughter whenever I need an instant uplift or remedy. Works for any kind of ache.
  11. Square peg in a round hole? Just.forget.it
  12. On a heavier, spiritual note: Matthew 7:15 is a real deal. I have seen more of them now and glad that nothing can shake my faith.
  13. I can wear bright pink lipstick. And also in need of a good eye-cream.
  14. A guy who drinks a USD5 worth of beer with corny pick-up-line may not be able to afford buying you a USD20 worth of cocktail you are sipping.
  15. Red is the way to go for fingernails and 60's style swimwear will still be a hit for another year or two. Invest in them. And in handbags.
  16. When in doubt, there's always my dogs. And peanut butter and jelly sandwich (or Nasi Padang). And naps.
Praise to be God... this below, is the ultimate lesson I have learned.

"Everything that you've ever wanted is on the other side of fear."

In my case, baby, it is LOVE. And am getting closer to the other side of my fear!

Happy Feet

This is my "not a farewell note" to my colleagues at "The Place of Refuge".
The content is self-explanatory.

Dear all,
If we were meant to stay in one place, we'd have roots instead of feet.” - Rachel Wolchin. (Longer legs, and a Chinese-princess’ feet, that's what I’d like to have if one could request)

But I am thankful for having a healthy pair that’s now ready to move on. It has been an enthralling two and a half years, I am genuinely saying. That experience made me realize that I have to learn some more elsewhere while at the same time sharing what I have gained over the past time from each and everyone of you. I will always define AYANA & RIMBA as world-class product. But your friendship, your amazing team-work and leadership are the main core of it. All in all, the essence is YOU!

I am proud to carry its legacy on my resume and hope that I have left some values with you too. This is just my last day here at AYANA/RIMBA and it does not mean the same to our friendship.
See you in and around the island!

ps: Wish me luck!

Your Journey

I was questioning myself the past few months for one decision I know for sure I am taking. But then I got too tired thinking about what would people would say.
Just in time, I stumble upon this quote. And this rings so true!

Deciding on your destiny

Recently, I encountered a... not so wanted "reunion". It took me only a Nano-second to realize how time really can heal the pain, work its spell and help you understand that... everything is meant to be.
I typed, deleted, re type a few paragraphs on this posting, biting my fingers in uncertainty that I may have written too much.

But this is what I decided to share:

When you hit rock bottom. You have nowhere else to go but... up. I heard that a gazillion times and maybe have experienced it in the count of hundreds, but at that very night... I just realized it with all my heart.
How could I not?

You may have been deleted, banished from a so-called ring of friendship, but that's only an end result of finding true one(s). You may not be able to connect with them in a way anymore...or , you are struggling through speeches just to break the ice, you do not get their jokes, you are flustered and confused... Trust this; that's simply because you have passed that bar. You are in a different world, another level. And that is where you are meant to be.

Yes, there will always be that little piece of sweet memories about them. Things you once thought will last forever, but apparently not. But let me ask you, if you are being asked to choose, to re-create those little sweetness, or create new one with people who are now proven to be real for you... What would you pick?
Yes you have been hurt. But as you are healed, don’t you realize that the process is taking you to a place way further than where you think you could ever be?

I may have less friends, but who's left with me today are the real one(s). How can I  not be grateful? And I decided to be.
This pair of shoes I am wearing is not a designer labeled, but God has made a solid roof on top of my head. A home of my own. A result of years of hard work that may have never been accomplished if I did not stepped out of my past a few years ago, if I did not make that tough decision that has brought me to where I am today.

Those jokes don’t get me to laugh anymore, we are no longer in the same picture.
You and I particularly... are only a step away from being total strangers.
But if that's what it takes, for me to reach my fate.... I decided to letting it be.

I am here, at this very second...brought by millions of flaws and mishaps... is actually doing nothing but fulfilling my destiny.
And oh how I wish that's where you are too.

Welcoming August

Oh, you are here already? Guess there is nothing I can do about it. Have a seat, August :)

It seems like I just bid farewell to 2011 a few seconds ago... But, no. The 8th months in this Gregorian calender that I am breathing in is entering its turn.

Hear me out. A lot has changed the past 8 months and I am holding my breath to some more changes that is about to happen. Things that will blow your mind just as it will explode my brain. Hahaha! Exaggerate much? Maybe. But... I know I can do this. (To this very second, I am still too superstitious to tell you about it but I will!). I am nervous, excited and pacing- not- in a resting heartbeat!

What are you up to this month?

To my girfriend(s)

So it has been a while. I know so. No need to go into details here, but I am back. I had a chance to talked via messenger with 2 of my girlfriends this week and there are 2 things that came out of them that still surprises me to this second.

" I wish can be as a free soul and  spirited as you are Abel, maybe it will be easier for me to handle hardships in life"
" I know you have your own pace and space, I know you have your right to either keep things with you or to share... But, try not to surprise us too much, okay?"

Those came from people I care about. So, what they say matter. A lot.
Typical me, I tend to keep it to my self, think about it when I am alone in my little loft so that I can get a well round understanding about things.

I am not that much of a free soul. Even if I am so close to it, it took me a lot to get there. Maybe you know about it. I just happen to have a very limited listening skill when it comes to negative force. That's all. So when things get hard, when people talk bad, when they laugh at my dreams, when they're reasoning my failures... All I am hearing is this buzz... bluuurp... blop and...beep. Maybe, you may want to try that. You know by heart, whatever you are facing will not affect those people's life. So, never let them do that to you.

And for that surprising step I just made? I know you are happy for me too. When I decided to let love in (after a period that some people considered as centuries), it surprise me too! I am sorry that I did not make you part of the questioning phase. And thank you for pointing this one to me- that you think of me as big deal. Somehow, it seems to be a familiar way for me to share things when I at least have a long haul idea about what it's going to bring. Your tremendous understanding is filling me with such grateful feelings. Thank you.

I love you both girls. Catch up soon.

Awesome Monday: Charlie Chaplin and Mahatma Gandhi

Welcome Monday! I bet you can easily tell who these people are in our Awesome Monday picture post. Interesting random facts about them; Mahatma Gandhi spoke English with an Irish accent, for one of his first teachers was an Irishman. Can you imagine?
And, Charlie Chaplin once entered a Charlie Chaplin look alike contest and did not make it. Ha! ( source: one of my all time fave light reading You are One Third Daffodil )

This is the last Monday in the month of January 2012 and today, I have to do one of the toughest thing for the first time this year. This year, I repeat. I have done some major, life altering, heart breaking decisions before ;).
Wish me luck. To become a character so great that you can change the world is never possible if you are not willing to do the very first step of changing your life. And I am about to do so.

And allow me to add that whatever it is  that I am doing in life is just a part of God's plan. To Him be the glory, man shall not boast.

(Today is  the anniversary of Gandhi's death 30 January 1948 (aged 78) New Delhi, Dominion of India)

Awesome Monday is inspired from this tumblr .

Will and Will not

One random topic. How far do you know yourself so that you can distinguish very surely things you will change and things you will not? I have been thinking about it the whole day and as a pace of training if will try to jot them down. Here you go;
(ps: all in random order and may mounting up as time goes)

I know I will never:
  • Lose my faith.
  • Have cats.
  • Be too old for cartoon movies, dancing under the rain, and act all silly whenever the mood strikes.
  • Brave enough to ride a motor bike. I am happy just to be the passenger who will repeatedly yells " slooow dooowwwwn". But never, ride it on my own.
  • Admitting that "regret" is normal. But moving on is a must.
  • Get sick of a sweet french kiss. Especially one that has "pauses" in the middle because I cannot stop giggling when doing it.
  • Eat Indian food again.
  • Stop reading and writing and adore music and art. I did not regret that I fail on my violin and piano classes when I was a kid. Was too active, not that "genius" and too goofy back then. I ended up as one music lover anyway.
  • Change my last name. If it matters much for the spouse, I will hyphenated it; Tressabel Hutasoit- XYZ. If...
  • Let anyone define who I really am.
  • Color my hair. I am so proud of the dark as the night color. Will never ever dye them.
And at some stage, I know I will:
  • Be too busy decorating my own house I will have no time to blog as much *big grin. After that, my posts will be all about home decor. (# in my Bucket List)
  • Cook. Not the easy ones but the "rich with twists and flavors" Asian cooking. Oh dear Grandma, please bear with me.
  • Get wrinkles under my eyes. I laugh a lot. This is the risk.
  • Understand that the whole thing is not about me. Like the first chapter in Rev. Rick Warren's book: Purpose Driven Life: It's not about you.
  • Have that one particular book published ( which reminds me of this so hard to wrapped up those chapter!)
  • Be in that pilgrimage tour to Israel. Mom, count me on this.
  • Have my own family. Be one godly, loving woman for one man, be the type of a mother who will always hover on my children's back (haha!), spoil them with love, do anything for their education.
  • Discipline the yoga class again (oh wait, this has to start next week!)

Menyoal Perubahan

Apa kabar?
Singkatnya, setelah bertahun tak kunjung sua...akhirnya kita bertemu lagi.
Kalau kita mau.
Kalau majalah fesyen memaparkan make over dramatis, saya mengerti.
Tuannya mendelik sewot.
