Click to watch reels

𝗦𝗲𝗽𝗮𝘁𝘂 𝗕𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗸

Kemarin Bapak janji mau menemani beli sepatu
Karena sebentar lagi
Mau tahun ajaran baru

Sepatuku sudah bunyi-bunyi
Karena alasnya telah lebar menganga
Plak.. pluk… plak… pluk
Begitu kata si sepatu tanpa merek itu

Pokoknya harus jadi beli
Begitu ujarku

Sudah pukul tiga petang
Bapak belum juga terlihat bersiap pergi
Padahal aku sudah mandi

Besok saja
Kata Bapak, membuat bibirku manyun tiga senti
Bapak malu ke toko sepatu

Alasannya
Sambil menyeka dahi dengan handuk basah
Ada luka disana
Di dahinya yang lebar seperti dahiku

Tapi besok kan tokonya tutup Pak
Dan lusa aku sudah masuk sekolah
Aku mulai merengek
Masak iya aku pinjam sepatu Bapak?

Bapak tertawa
Tahu jelas maksudku sepatu yang mana
Sepatu warna merah menyala yang hak nya tinggi sekali

Mana nyaman dipakai sekolah
Walau ukuran kaki kita sama
Bapak bergurau
Saking besarnya kakiku

Aku ikut tergelak
Urung merajuk

Kata Bapak sambil mengelus kepangku
Aku diam saja

Kasihan sama Bapak sepatunya tinggal sebelah
Membalas gerombolan lelaki sialan
Yang menimpuk bapak dan teman-temannya dengan batu
Saat semalam cari uang di jalan

Sepatu yang kanan ya pak yang hilang?
Aku memastikan
Iya, jawab Bapak tenang

Doaku
Cukup dalam hati

Karena aku tahu, Bapak tak akan mengaminkan
💔👠🤍

On Books That Your Heart Clutches

I first read "Dear Ijawele, or a Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions" in 2022, and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has since captured my heart.

This year, I sink my nose to inhale Purple Hibiscus which tells the story of Kambili and her older brother Jaja, who lead a privileged life in Enugu, Nigeria, sheltered from life's troubles and truth.

Her works were not only raw and ingratiating but also invested with a profound sense of honesty that resonated deeply with me.

Captivated by her style, I recently borrowed "The Thing Around Your Neck" from the library. It is a poignant collection of short stories that intricately maps the experiences of Nigerian women as they navigate the complexities of love—or the lack thereof—along with the heart-wrenching themes of loss and the everyday struggles they encounter in a challenging world. The depth and authenticity of these narratives invite readers to reflect on the resilience of women in the face of adversity.

Have you read any of her works? How do you recover from it?

The (re)birth of feminism

This is not a pregnancy announcement post.

It is, however, an attempt to evoke the dilation of a giant rebirth called Feminism.

Over the last ten years, I've written stories and poems circling one significant theme. A theme that speaks of the uterus and uses the word vagina sans apologetic nuance.
The theme is sewed in a satirical tone and with mostly dark endings, if not left undone.

A dear friend once asked if I would write different stories after I re-marry. This question, I believe, is based on one general assumption. That feminists are all mad.

Yes. We all are.
Not many realize this anger comes from tragic stories; death over what we wear (and do not); abuse simply because we say no (and when we say yes); voices kept shut (because, really, who would believe her story?); doors to education slammed (if we're lucky enough not being shot in the head); and ways for justice remain dark.

But we are also hopeful. At least, I am.
Me marrying the man I love does not change my mind about what I advocate. If anything, it fuels it.

Feminism allows a bond to be vulnerable and brave about making decisions and after one's dream.
Being comfortable telling your partner that you do not want to go for a round of IVF or to tell them you're broke and need them to support you for a while.
To confidently tell them you want both last names to be part of your child's, to take turns being gentle or firm.

But those are only the small things.

There's a reason why Gender Equality is UNSDG #5.

From a bigger perspective, Feminism force is thriving towards the well-being of a family, society, country, and even the world.

Fewer would give in to child marriage, many stomping for better education, malnutrition would end, and wage parity would deliver stability to all stakeholders.
And perhaps we could all sleep better at night.

As Merriam Webster dictionary states, Feminism; is a belief in and advocacy of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes expressed through organized activity on behalf of women's rights.

Simple, but the road is long.

Now take a deep breath, world.
We are about to give birth ❤⭐

Menyoal Hakikat Perempuan Sejati

Kenapa Siswi disebut primadona?

Suatu hari, Siswi mengalami musibah keguguran.

Nothing personal. It’s nature.
Ada manusia yang merasa? Silakan berhenti membaca tulisan saya.

Siswi agak nyentrik, bahkan sering dibilang biang kerok.

Lucu? Mungkin.
Tapi, sebagai seorang skeptic sejati… saya justru merasa sedih.

Siswi merasa ditolak, jadilah ia pencari perhatian kelas berat.
Siswi merasa tidak cantik lagi, jadilah dia galak sama perempuan lain.
Terutama sama siapa tebak? Yes, Arya!

Makes so much more sense now?

Apakah Siswi punya pilihan lain?

A homo sapiens and a Pongo pygmaeus.
But eye to eye. Woman to woman.

Nobel laureate Tim Hunt resigns after 'trouble with girls' comments

Thank you, Tim.
For you have given us women more room in science lab by resigning. And, did you know that we we have FIFA World Cup for women now? We did not have that opportunity a few years ago, but maybe... "because men have stepped aside", now we can.

By the way, I was being sarcastic. That's the style we use these days in 2015. Just thought you want to know since... your calendar probably say it is the 1920s.
If you have time to spare, you may want to google Marie Currie (also available in this blog), Jane Goodall, Rosalind Franklin...
Do not google my name, tho.

PS: Read more here and here If you wonder what else rhymes with Tim Hunt.

Sophia, the youngest feminist to date

Sophia Trow (8 y.o) and her mother, Jane, went to a Clarks retail store in England to purchase a pair of Stomposaurus shoes. It's "just" and awesome collection, featuring little dinosaurs fit for any adventurer or a Ross Geller wanna be.

There was just one problem... the shoes were labeled as boys’ shoes. When Sophia claimed that she wanted them, the sales clerk immediately told her that they aren’t made for “feminine bone structure.”
I am pretty sure Sophia rolled her eyes (like any feminist would) when being told so because she wrote the following letter (see image at the bottom)
It is reported that Sophia went on to explain, “I don’t like how girls just have to like pink and purple – I like blue and science and fossils. Clarks should learn what girls really want and do something about it.”
Supporting her strong daughter, Jane tweeted it to Clarks. “I want my children to have options,” she said. “I don’t want them hampered by expectations that tell them how they should behave as girls – I want them to be able to do whatever they want to do and become strong women." to which Clarks responded with “We are sorry to hear that Sophia was informed these shoes aren’t suitable for girls. The Stomposaurus range can safely be worn by all children. We are also developing a broader range of unisex styles which will be available from Autumn/Winter this year.”
Kudos, Sophia! And I am sure you are going to end up doing great things, like this girl, and this boy
Just wondering tho... maybe you and I would like to start a petition so Clarks would make these Stomposaurus shoes in adult sizes too?
PS: That one cute nerd: Sophia Trow and THAT SHOES!
Also, have you seen this campaign : #LikeaGirl ? (I almost cried... since, am a girl, obvs!)

Indonesian Female Police Recruits subjected to Virginity test

I am not kidding.
And I could not believe that I have missed this.

While am jotting this with shaky fingers, I am waiting for my friend who works in a major newspaper publication in Indonesia to get back to me with more details and if he can give me any kind of petition or forums to sound my opinion.

My beloved Tanah Air... people have gone to the moon and back, land on comets and recycling 99% of their trash (kudos, Sweden), yet here we are... objectifying women instead of supporting their dreams.

This is not OK: Indonesia police recruits virginity test

Sign the petition here, I know... I know we cannot guarantee how fast is this going to be fixed, or if it ever will be. But, if we do not do anything then nothing will happen...
Petition to stop virginity exam.

Intimidate much?

Well I never felt that way before... but my best girlfriends (and some guy friends!) starting to nudge this out of me!

So, I can come across as intimidating to the guy that I am with. Not to friends nor colleagues because I pretty much let my hair down when I am with them. But relationships get me nervous and I always put one shield before another to protect myself from getting hurt. The best way to do that is to be... cocky, bossy and to be "Miss-I-always-have-an-opinion-about-anything", or as my best friend Ria would say"Miss-Whoever-You-are".
Guilty. I do that to any guy that I was with.

I am not here to speak for all the ladies with this post, obviously... But just in case you are the type that will not enjoy being too close to an intimidating lady, I will give you a hint or two to recognise them instantly.

These are their (or, my species) symptoms and I am taking the liberty to use the word "we"
  • We will always have an opinion about something. And the deeper we are in disagreement, the more we will enjoy it. It does not matter who will win the argument (oh yes, we look for one), we just enjoy being stimulated that way
  • There will never be a day in which we say "Up to you." when a guy asked where to go for dinner. Isn't that why you asked? To get our answer? The closest thing I do to being submissive is to narrow down the option by saying this "Well. I am down with almost anything but NOT restaurant A, B or X..."
  • When we feel like it took the guy ages to pick what he wants from the menu, we will fearlessly make suggestions as in telling you what to order exactly. Not every guy appreciates that... apparently.
  • We will say bluntly if we like you or if what you did make us feel special. But we will also look you in the eyes and say "I do not like what you just said/did...". You do not have to fish for compliments nor a complaint
  • If you show respect to your parents, elderly and a waiter, we will praise you for that.
  • When we say "I will support you." we mean it with all our heart. Same goes when we say "You are amazing." We mean that
  • Taking notes on chivalry gestures is one of our specialties. So yes, we did notice when you wait to take the first bite of your meal after we have ours. Thank you for that.
  • We will make sharp feedback if you asked us about work, personal life, or a football match. And we can be soft-spoken about it... but sometimes, maybe... we forget. Not that we do not appreciate you, but it feels enthralling to know that someone that we like and or love wants to know what is on our mind
  • This is my personal biggest sin: Around a month after my wedding, I got invited to a dinner event in which my assistant RSVPd with my name that she changed with liberty to my then husband's last name. I did not blame her, she was just making an assumption. But when my then husband and I arrived there, I could not help it. I asked them to change my last name back to my maiden name in the guest list. I did not mean anything to hurt or offend him, no way.. but that's not my name... and nothing can change that
  • You can almost hear our eyes roll when you used the so-called pick up lines. And our eyebrows will reach our tip of forehead when you wear ugly shoes. Raising eyebrows! Cannot help it
  • If you get sick, we can take care of  you like a protective mama. But do not nag. Just drink that drops, and get better
  • We buy our own stuffs and like to point that out to the guy we are in a relationship with. Especially if they are good stuff. No means to be a snob there, we just want them to know that we do not need them to worry about that part in our life. Yes, a beautiful watch can be a nice gesture for our birthdays, or a designer-labeled hand bag. But we will not judge you if it is not a vintage-oyster Rolex or Marc Jacobs. We have that covered. Do not freak out....
  • It can happen 5 years from now. Or 2. But going back to college is most likely in the agenda
  • We know if whether or not we want kids. We know. Just like we know where we want to be in 5 years. Or what to have for dinner
  • No matter in what century we are now living, we still expect you to open the door for us. No room for negotiation here
  • Befriending us is easy. We can go with friends to a thrift store and we go for cheap lunches. But when it comes to dating, we will judge a man by how much they tip the waiter. This.is.true
  • Mortgage of our very own house. Check
  • Chanel hand bag, well-taken-care pet. Check. Check
  • Vibrator? Oh yes... check
  • We secretly think we are smarter than you are. And here's the last one...
  • Asking for your opinion in our big life decisions? Only if you survive the above. And that means you are in the safe zone, baby
Those are the one(s) I can see and admit so far
Now I have a question, would you change something about yourself to fill up... let's say, someone's ego?
Will you go out with a man that is going to tell you to be submissive when you are not?
Is there a safe meet-half-way line in between so you can compromise to keep the relationship? Or to build a solid one?

Women of God (in the making)

A few years ago, I posted this poem.
But here below, I will try to jot down what I understand from the beautiful phrases, with my limited wisdom from my lacking of life experience.

Tough vs Tender.
I may appear tough and bold. But what I am actually doing is trying to hide my fragile heart. This means, I still have no idea what tender really means.

Coarse vs Kind
I am not always kind. Obviously.

Rude vs Refined
Rude is easy. But refined acts takes effort and I am not going to stop being molded.

Fame vs Faith
Fame and fortune is, funny enough... can follow you when you have faith. Whether or not you want it. But trust me, faith comes first.

Greed vs Good
Greed is contagious, and has a mortal effect. And whenever its lurk is starting to tempt me, I turn my head and consiousness to good.

Vanity vs Virtue
Vanity can be bought. Any man can ensemble one. But virtue will demand your whole heart, mind and soul to be torn apart at first. There's not enough money in the world to buy even a piece of it.

Popularity vs Purity
And last... popularity. I think is the hardest way to purity.
Hardest.

Simplify the complexity of Feminism

I am in no mood to phrase a long paragraph and I am running out of coffee too..., a potion that gets me to write better. So I will save your time and just jot these down where you are free to either agree or disagree.

Ideas about Feminism from a decaffeinated -sober woman.
  1. A continuous journey that I might have learned at first from Simone's The Second Sex, and strengthened by Eve Ensler's Vagina Monologue, and intrigued by those Barbie dolls I never had
  2. Not merely about making choices of your own, but to stand up for them even when no one got your back
  3. Admitting that at one point, one summer, one new year's eve... one day... maybe, a man can caught you off guard. And, you might fall in and out of love, girl
  4. To crave for sex. And knowing you can ask for  more
  5. To be able to make your man wolfing over that burnt cookies you made as your first (and probably last) baking attempt
  6. Keeping your last name. Or changing it because you just want it
  7. To say no to sex
  8. Asking for help (nicely... and yes, maybe to a man) when you have tried moving heaven and earth and nothing else seems to work
  9. Expecting chivalry especially because you are a lady
  10. Not letting failure, mistakes and imperfection make you feel any less of a woman that you are

I am not Feminist, trust me... Oh well...

The recent ridiculous gabble from Jakarta's Governor over one particular rape case make me want to re post this line from one angry girl again;

I am not a feminist, But...

I am not a feminist, but I appreciate the right to help choose my government representatives.
I enjoy the option of wearing pants or shorts if I want.
I’m pleased that I was allowed to learn to read and write.
It can be very convenient to control how many babies I want to have.
It’s awfully useful to be able to open a bank account and own property in my name.
I like knowing that my husband or boyfriend cannot legally beat me.
It’s really swell to keep the money that I earn.

( And I found this one perfect picture ... )
