Joke's on Whom?

Have you seen Todd Phillips’ Joker movie? Have you recovered yet?
Have you moved on from the piercing and delirious eyes of Joaquin Phoenix?

Joker has sparked many conversations about mental illness. But while the movie gets some things right, other parts seem lost in translation. According to psychiatry professor Dr Ziv Cohen, who specializes in violence and psychopathy, “Joker strengthens the incorrect stereotype that there is a link between mental illness and violence.”

There is not. Because studies show that people with mental illnesses are far more likely to hurt themselves than they are to hurt other people. Cohen says the Joker doesn't fall into the criteria for diagnoses such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, and is more likely to be a psychopath, but even that is reductive. But yes, Arthur Fleck is obviously mentally ill.

That said, I believe there are a few key takeaways from the movie that should be labeled Oscar worthy.

First, about being kind to those around you. Because as the old saying goes, everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. So be kind. Always.  Second, about being kind to ourselves. Spoiler alert!

Let’s look back. There are parts I loved about the movie as well as the genius soundtrack; how the mentally ill Joker is still capable of taking care of his mother, picturing himself having a relationship, and even holding on to a job despite the mocking and constant badgering from his colleagues.

Yours Truly cannot help but reflect, and be grateful. Although work may at some point take its toll now and then, most of us are still in a good state of mind.

And those who are not? Have we done enough for ourselves, or have we done too much, or too little? Have we managed our work/life balance to keep our general health intact? Have we as leaders in each of respective industries provided an outlet that supports a healthy working environment?

If you are looking for answers, join in our recent conversation with Marriott General Managers on work/life balance in promoting breast cancer awareness.
A fascinating article related to the recently held Mental Health Day, as well as October being Breast Cancer Awareness month.

A healthy body encourages a healthy mind, so on a daily basis, look for nearby activities in your neighborhood, such as these sporting events in Jakarta,  try these swimming pools if you are in Bandung, or maybe invest in these retreats the next time you are travelling to Bali.
Thrive to be well as mental health is not a joke.

If you want to know more about mental health and how to help, talk to some of these organisations in Bali and find a cause that you can support. Maybe their stories can help us believe that all the everyday hardships in life, work stress, and relationship strains, are better shared with people who care about us and we care about. All of life’s ups and downs are normal, so long as we know how to bounce back. And a supportive network helps even more.

As Sinatra would sing (with Arthur Fleck swaying in the background), “That’s life…”

Max The Hero Dog

Finally! A movie that I am excited to see and tear-jerk this year! This canine adventure one is from the director of Remember The Titans (all-time fave) and a producer of Marley and Me (family's fave).

Max the Hero Dog

" "Max" played by five Belgian Malinois, but Carlos played in almost 80% of the movie. Four other Belgian Malinois dogs had their facial features carefully dyed to resemble and assist, each one with his own specialty. Jagger served as the main understudy. Dude specialized in jumping, Pilot in knocking people down and play-fighting. Pax was used for running shots and "happens to be good at showing his teeth," says Mathlide de Cagny of Birds & Animals Unlimited, who trained the dogs with O.J. Knighten.

The Other Woman

On the last week of my job at my previous hotel, one of my biggest project: a short movie, was completed. Done, wrapped, ready to be shared. But yes, it was only on my last day that I got to show this to everyone in a general meeting/ farewell event, and it seems that the marketing of it has not yet been channeled.
But that is not why I am writing this post.

The purpose of this blog is not only for me to share personal stories and insights. But also to show my work. This, is one of them. The cooking of the idea was an amazing process, as it is based on a true story that I had to tweak. Yes, I am the director of this short movie, as well the script writer. And, the stylist!

In my industry (or maybe everywhere) you can sometimes be complaisant with standard and template, and... stop creating. I am glad I am still learning and producing.
By blogging this, I am inviting you to view it, please. And let me know what you think. It is not Coppola's, nor it is a Cannes quality as it is still a marketing movie but I hope you get to see why I am very proud of my rookie and raw talent and is not afraid to push forward for improvement.

Another short movie is still now in the making (giddy!) and I cannot wait to show you the result.

PS: Spot an energetic black fur!

You Were There

Mellow mode, activated.

I used to watch this movie: Simon Birch with my Dad for like a gazillion times. Today, I dare not to watch it again, as... I am not so into forming rivers on my cheeks anymore. As in, I am too embarrassed to (But I know I would!).

Ever since, I always thought of the soundtrack as one of our songs, just like this one; hoping that he will Remember Me this Way :).

If you have not seen it, please do so. And try to listen to the song and pay attention to the lyrics... If you know me well enough, you will understand why I am reaching out for Kleenex as I am typing this post down.

ps: "And it hurts, when I smile. Cause my heart still remembers when you were around. Bapak"

Which famous people do you want to be friends with?

Ah it's that time to answer  one of my favorite Illustrator Emily Mcdowell 's pressing question again!
I love this one: "Which famous people do you want to be friends with?". I am with Emily on Falcor (The NeverEnding Story!) and Mindy Kaling.
Other than those names, I am also dying to be friends with Meryl Streep, for obvious reasonsKeanu Reeves, Zooey Deschanel, Jessica Quirk (fashion blogger), Djenar Maesa Ayu (Indonesian writer) and George Lois. And of course, with Simba and Mufasa from The Lion King.

What about you?

ps: Other questions from Emily. By the way, notice how I mentioned The NeverEnding Story on her pop quiz about Childhood Obsessions? Emily did not mention Falcor there but did on this one. Well... Great minds nerd alike.

Begin Again

Have you seen this movie?
Not the most earth-shattering but I would call it a breeze of fresh air! Must love Mark Ruffalo!

I adore all the songs, especially this one below: Tell Me If You Wanna Go Home
And this one: Coming Up Roses , and this cheesy Loved You like a Fool.

ps: Levine, maybe, no more movies in future?

La Luna

Have you seen this Pixar's short movie: La Luna?
It's so beautiful and endearing I wish they make a children's book out of it.

ps: My other fave Pixar's shorts: Partly Cloudy :)

Life of Pi

Oh my! I used to be a reluctant when it comes to a book adaptation movie. But, here's a confession, I actually have seen "To Kill a Mockingbird", yes, the black and white movie :)
So I think it's no harm to watch another one. Especially one that is supposedly an 'unfilmable book' by Yann Martel.

Let me jot the reasons down:

The director is Ang Lee: Have you not seen the "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon"?
A 3D: I love being visually intrigued and entertained.
Tear jerking trailer: Obviously.

Miss Whoever-you-are?

Though I have read Truman Capote's Breakfast at Tiffany's (cover to cover) and seen the movie (sorry, but...zzzzzz).... somehow, not until this very evening that I realize how this feels like a slap in my face...

"You know what's wrong with you, Miss Whoever-you-are? You're chicken, you've got no guts. You're afraid to stick out your chin and say, "Okay, life's a fact, people do fall in love, people do belong to each other, because that's the only chance anybody's got for real happiness." You call yourself a free spirit, a "wild thing," and you're terrified somebody's gonna stick you in a cage. Well baby, you're already in that cage. You built it yourself. And it's not bounded in the west by Tulip, Texas, or in the east by Somali-land. It's wherever you go. Because no matter where you run, you just end up running into yourself."
(Breakfast at Tiffany's, 1961)

To Make you Feel my Love

My understanding about American Idol is close to zero. No argument here and I have no hesitation that the show continue to convey many-many talents covering all music genres and give the winners a well deserved fame. I just do not watch TV that much. So, the same opinion goes to any other show; reality shows with celebrities on it, master chefs... you name it, I do not know anything more than just the title.
But, I love watching family serials form DVD. Parenthood is one of my favorite. Just finished wrapping up season 2 and the wedding scene of Crosby and Jasmine- (the two strong-headed lovers ) in the finale episode make me swell. Why? The background music as the bride walks into the aisle is just... hypnotizing. A song that I knew as a song written by Bob Dylan is performed so enchantingly by the choir in the movie. The next thing I know, I glued myself to YouTube to look for the video and fell for this one.

If any of you have the video from Parenthood finale season, please show me the link...
Anyhow... I am enjoying this one too, a video from Kris Allen who happens to be one of the talented singer from that show I have never seen before :)

ps: I am not into the looping images, I just want you to read the lyrics. Sweetness.

Words and I

Taken from one of my favorite movie; can you tell what the title is?

I can totally relate and bow my head in an agreement. Despite the fact that I am stuck with words now, I still look through it for remedy.
I learned that the only way to escape from this writer's block it is by believing in its own power. Weird?  Well... When it comes to words and I... That's how we roll.

Geeky Bad Boy? Yum!

About 10 years ago, bad boy material always made me swell. Most of my closest friends know that I am the biggest wuss there is when it comes to relationship and or making the first move, so the bad boy crushes always ended up just being a head turner and a stomping heart I kept as a secret. I am not into bad boy anymore. Guess, that was just a phase.

But, I always... always have a thing for... geeks! Designers (web, graphic), writers, journos, architect, engineers, physicians, professors, columnists, (good goofy looking, glasses, preppy but not too much, a bit scruffy).

Now I wonder... if only I had the guts to approach any of the bad boy during that dainty phase of my life, is there a possibility that one of them is also a geek in a bad boy skin? Like Will here in Good Will Hunting? Aaahhh... you know the saying: in the end, you only regret the things you did not do. Bummer.

One Day

Anne Hathaway is amazing!

I later on learned that this movie is based on a book by David Nicholls . Fortunately I have not read it, otherwise I might miss a chance to see Anne Hathaway's awesome act! Since, you know, I have a tendency to resent watching a-book adaptation-movies. Ha!

Pixar short films to the rescue

Is it just me or most of movie sequels are just...suck? Well, not entirely suck but at a general measurement- not as good as the first one. And by saying most; I simply have an opinion that some are really an exception to the rule. For example; The Toy Story. 1,2,3; ALL great. Also adore Cars (Pixar), Monster's Inc ( Pixar), Shrek ( Dream works), Ice Age (Dream works), Nemo ( yes, Pixar) etc..etc...

Whoa... wait, did I only mention cartoon movies up there? Specifically; Pixar! Ah yes dear, I am one cartoon movie aficionados. You name it, I can guarantee you I have seen it. I even have special folders in my laptop where I store all my fave cartoon movies- both the original and the short version ones. Freaky?
Maybe.... but; last weekend, I was on a plane flying back to Bali from a business trip in Singapore. And, since it was the last day of the ASEAN summit , many flights instructed to wanders up in the sky for hours before landing or in my case- to another airport! It was quite depressing. This couple next to me was with a 14 months old baby, they have tried anything possible to stop the baby from crying; feed, rock, stroll from one end to another. Nothing works. Then... I politely ask the mother if her baby by any chance will respond well to a cartoon movie. She was all eyeballing at me and and ; "Do you have that with you now? any cartoon movie! Whatever?"
And that is how my Pixar Short Films collection off  TO THE RESCUE! One baby down to laughter and fell asleep.
I did not have the heart to take a picture of the baby giggling over my treasure, but here's a  screen shot of my mood medicine.

For the Birds
Another thing; Romance movie does not get me to weep. But cartoon? Yes. If you are also a big weeper like me on cartoon movie, you may want to know why adults cry so easily in animated movies?  .

Carpe Diem

Have you seen Dead Poets Society ? I know it is not a movie for everyone, but truth is I LOVE IT! So this cute design reminds me of the scene where John Keating ( Robin Williams) inspires the boys to "Seizeee the daaay!". Carpe Diem indeed.

A King's child

Somehow, this dialogue between Simba and Mufasa in my all time favorite; The Lion King, reminds me of my late Dad... and of who I really am ( one ultimate truth that I ridiculously forget sometimes) .
I am the King's child :)

Mufasa: Simba!
Simba: Father?
Mufasa: Simba you've forgotten me.
Simba: No, how could I?
Mufasa: You've forgotten who you are so you forgot me, look inside yourself Simba, you are more than what you've become, you must take your place in the cirlce of life.
Simba: How can I go back? I'm not what I'm suppose to be.
Mufasa: Remember who you are, you are my son and the one true king. Remember who you are.

The Help (Book; Done. Movie: Let's see)

Yes. the movie is out! However, having all the not so pleasant experience of watching "based on book" movies , I am not in so much of euphoria to watch this one. But, I can tell you one thing;
Never once I read a book that gets me to;  not being able to decide which exactly is my favorite character. They are just too awesome! I have laughed and cried my way through this book, amazed by the three women who form its core, idealistic Skeeter, loving Aibileen, and sarcastic, sassy Minny, narrate their chapters each in a voice that is distinctive.
Trust me, this one is a true fresh air in work of literature. Order it here !

I am Sam

Remember my jailbreak saga? Well, since I only have like a half of the lost albums as a back up in my macbook, I now am starting to collect the "vanished" ones. One by one, track by track. This very moment I really need to listen to this album. Every single song in the album (esp one with Eddie Vedder's vocals). But it takes time tho'... So, here I am, posting while waiting for the download to be completed, and in reminisce with the story that remains. With the album, the movie and the very man who once gave this record to me.  Not Sean Penn.

Childhood Movie

What's your favorite movie when you were little? Not TV serials, I bet most kids in all generations have tons - but real movie? When VHS is still "it" and you are sometimes role playing the scenes? (Or was it just me?)
These are three of my most favorites...

The Sound of Music
The NeverEnding Story
